Moulded Plastic Cable Drag Chains

ELEKTROMAG Moulded Plastic Cable Drag Chains are a logical addition to the range of the steel Cable Drag Chains which have proved themselves worldwide for over 25 years.

They can be used wherever the required energy input cables/hoses are light, the travel is small and the environmental conditions permit the use of plastics.

The chain links and separating plates for taking the cables/hoses, form a single unit in the ELEKTROMAG Cable Drag Chains. The individual chain links can be connected by a snap connection enabling them to be joined to form a chain of any required length. One of the advantages of this system is that the customer can make up any required length of chain so that stocks can be kept and it is not necessary to place an order for each requirement.

If the cross section of a cable drag chain is too small for the cables, it is possible to divide the cables between a number of chains arranged side by side or opposite to each other.

ELEKTROMAG Moulded Plastic Cable Drag Chains can be used in horizontal applications within the stated permissible unsupported lengths without additional supports. However, if these lengths are exceeded or for different applications, the layout should be made by our engineers.

If the permissible unsupported length of the chain is exceeded, due to its elastic characteristics the upper section of the chain rests on the lower one. Due to the excellent anti-friction characteristics of the plastic material used, this does not impair the function of the chain when moving. However, it is essential that a guide channel is fitted. The chain in the channel behind the fixed point can also be supported by guide strips(A) or rollers(B) fitted to the channel wall.

Chain Type : 0900

          The chain type 0700 and 0900 can be supplied with or without separators. The chain can be supplied in totally enclosed form with hinges open or snap type. Variable widths can be provided with internal opening  ranging from 150 to 300 mm (max).However, internal height will remain the same in both models.

To specify a ELEKTROMAG Moulded Plastic Cable Drag Chain, we require the following information

  • Length of travel
  • Max acceleration or deceleration
  • Speed of travel
  • Frequency of travel
  • Number and outside diameter of the cables/hoses to be installed
  • Required minimum bending radius of cables or hoses
  • Weight of cables or hoses
  • Available mounting width
  • Type of application(dwg.if possible)
  • Working environment
Example:

A movable unit travelling at a speed of v=10m/min, with an acceleration of bmax=0.5m/s2 and a travel frequency of f=80 per hour is to carry 3x25 dia cable. The length of travel Ls is 2200 mm. Installation horizontal with fixed point below. The lower part of the chain rests on the machine base.

  1. Required unsupported length
    Lfreq = Ls/2= 2200/2 mm = 1100 mm
    (fixed point in centre of travel distance)
  2. Cross-Section
    Required clear width:
    E Cable dia + 10% allowance + E thickness of separating plate (for Type 0625)
    3 x 25 mm + 3 x 2.5 mm + 2 x 3.5 mm = 89.5 mm
    Required clear height :
    Max cable dia + 10% allowance
    25 mm + 2.5 mm = 27.5 mm
    Required cross-sectional area : 89.5 mm x 27.5 mm.
    Chain selected : Type 0625
    with clear internal cross-section 108 mm x 34 mm
  3. Bending Radius
    KRmin for 25 dia cable = 190 mm
    (spec.by manufacture.)
    Chosen standard bending radius KR = 200 mm
  4. Length of cable drag chain
    Lk = Ls / 2 + KR .pi + allowance (allowance = 4 x pitch)
    Lk = 1100 mm + 628 mm + 250 mm = 1978 mm
    Lk = 2000 mm (rounded off to the nearest pitch length)
  5. Connection height
    H = 2KR + link height
    H = 2 x 200 mm + 56 mm = 456 mm
Chosen design specification:
ELEKTROMAG Moulded Plastic Cable Drag Chain Type 0625:
KR = 200mm 2 Separating plates per link
lk = 2000mm for horizontal installation with fixed point below.
H = 456mm without support channel
With 4 connecting angles Chain rests on machine base
