Cable Drag Chains

ELEKTROMAG Cable Drag Chains enable the conveyance of flexible cables/hoses etc. to movable units with maximum reliability.

The ELEKTROMAG cable drag chains are so constructed that they cannot bend below a fixed minimum radius to suit the cable or hose.

ELEKTROMAG cable drag chains are not only used for cable leads but also for hoses conveying gaseous, liquid or pulverised media. Single twisted leads can be conducted close to one another.

Besides the normal horizontal movement, the ELEKTROMAG cable drag chain can be used in vertical, circular or combined horizontal and vertical applications.

ELEKTROMAG cable drag chains can be applied to movable units with minimum preparation.

ELEKTROMAG cable drag chains offer the following advantages:

  • Avoidance of mechanical strain on the cables/hoses no tensile stress or compression, no frictional wear as there is no relative movement between the cables/hoses and the cable drag chain, no bending below an established radius, no crushing, buckling or forming of loops, or torsion strain.
  • Long life of cables and hoses
  • Down time losses avoided
  • Accident safe
  • Minimum maintenance
  • Good appearance

ELKTROMAG cable drag chains can fulfill practically all individual constructive requirements. This applies to the length of travel, the number of cables and hoses, acceleration and speed requirements, existing space conditions, movements and special work environments.

INSTRUCTION FOR SELECTION OF APPROPRIATE ELEKTROMAG CABLE DRAG CHAIN

When planning a ELEKTROMAG Cable Drag Chain application, it is advisable to proceed as follows:

Required technical data

  1. Intended function
  2. Length of travel
  3. Max. acceleration or deceleration
  4. Speed of travel
  5. Frequency of travel
  6. Number and external diameter of the cables/hoses to be installed. Types of hoses and cables(with/ without fittings)
  7. Required bending radius
  8. Weight in kg/m of the cables and hoses (including hose content)
  9. Width available for the chain
  10. When used on cranes:side play of drive arm in mm
  11. Working environment

OVERVIEW OF TYPES
(Measurements in mm)

Key :
Bk = Width of drag chain
Bst = Width of stay
c = Distance of bore holes in hole stays
d = Cable/hose diameter
D = Diameter of bore holes in hole stays,

    or clearance height in frame stays.
    D = 1.1 d for electric cables
    D = 1.2 d for hoses
    Minimum allowance = 2mm

hG = Chain link height
KR = Bending radius
Lf = Self-supporting chain length
Lk = Length of drag chain
Ls = Unit's travel length
tG = Chain pitch
sT = Thickness of divider stays
HZ = Clearance height HZ = 2KR + hG + Z
(z= App. 10mm per Mt of Chain length)

The width of chain Bk :

Hole stay : sum of holes D + Sum of distance between holes c + Fixed addition

Frame stay : sum of cable/hose diameters d + 0.10 d + sum of dividers sT + fixed addition

If these data are available, check on

  1. Which chain type depending on the load is applicable for this travel length. (Diagram)

    Unsupported length of chain = Ls/ 2
    (Fixed point in centre of length of travel)

  2. The required hole diameter D should be 10 percent greater than the cable/hose diameter.
    The minimum clearance must be 2 mm
    Select type of stay
    Unsplit hole stay - Split hole stay - or Frame stay

  3. Select a suitable bending radius which is in excess of the largest minimum bending radius specified by the manufacturer for the cables/hoses.

In the event of conditions which are not covered in the catalogue, concerning length of chain, width of chain, speed of travel etc. please consult ELEKTROMAG.

Self-supporting lengths for dual-band chains depending on additional load

In the case of longer length of travel or unusual loads, the drag chain should supported by an energy feeder installation.

VARIATION OF STAYS

  • Frame Stay - with detachable profile bar

    With its removable cross bar, this stay offers the quickest possibility of fitting and if required adding and/or exchanging cables/hoses.

  • Solid frame stay - with sliding rail

    The Solid frame stay is used if the maximum width of the frame stay listed above is exceeded.

    The light metal profile with the inserted synthetic profile rail for protecting the cables/hoses ensures high stability of the drag chain.

  • Unsplit hole stay - Split hole stay

    The hole stay design offers the best way of carrying flexible cables/hoses in a cable drag chain, because each cable/ hose is guided in a separate hole in the neutral axis.

CHAIN CONNECTION DIMENSIONS

The connection angles at the closed chain end always form the fixed point.

In the standard method of fastening, the fastening bore holes of both connections are within the chain width. The screw-on surfaces may also be placed outwards.

Details of connection type and variants should be given in the order.

ACCESSORIES FOR ELEKTROMAG CABLE DRAG CHAINS

Trough
Length of trough LA = Ls / 2 + 300mm

To guarantee optimum operation of the ELEKTROMAG Cable Drag chain, a clean flat surface should be provided. If this is not possible then a trough is required.

Steelband Covering

ELEKTROMAG Cable Drag Chains with steelbands are used where it is necessary to protect the cables/hoses from hot chips and dust etc.

Driver

The driver connection between the cable drag chain and the movable unit may be of simple steel construction.
