Questionnaire For Cable/Hose Reeling Drum

INTRODUCTION

ELEKTROMAG-METOOL CABLE/HOSE REEL with spring powered automatic rewind provides a convenient way of supplying power to moving machines such as cranes and hoists as well as a flexible link for other services or controls.

DESCRIPTION

The range of Spring Operated Reels shown here are developed from the standard `S' series cable reels and are used largely for AC, DC applications.

Alternative flange or single-leg bracket mountings are available and both arrangements allow for easy cable replacement. Access to sliprings is by removal of a one piece housing, without the need to completely dismantle the whole reel, as is the case with traditional double bracket designs. In common with the rest of the `S' range, these reels are built to IP55 enclosure protection.

These reels recover and store the cable in multiple layers on the drum. For higher duties the cables should be derated accordingly. Multi-way slipring arrangements can be fitted to the SC40 and SC75 reels for use with double wound power/control circuits etc.

APPLICATION

    The following arrangements show the most common ways of installing the reels. For other applications please consult our technical sales department.

  1. Horizontal recovery-End Feed

    Mounted on the moving machine, the reel recovers the cable or hose which is laid on the ground or in a tray. With this arrangement the available machine travel is equal to the capacity of the reel.

  2. Horizontal recovery-Centre Feed

    This application is the same as (1) except that the machine travels both sides of the fixed point, where a turnover anchor is installed. This arrangement provides a machine travel equal to twice the capacity of the reel.

  3. Vertical Recovery

    The reel is again machine mounted and long vertical travels are available as the reel does not have to pull the weight of the cable. Capacities are the same as for 1. Horizontal Recovery. Since all the weight of the hanging cable/hose is felt at the fixed point, we recommend the use of a cable sock or grip to support the flexible here.

  4. Horizontal Catenary

    With this arrangement the cable/hose is not laid on the ground but suspended in air by virtue of the tension imparted by the spring.

  5. Horizontal Drag

    This arrangement requires high spring tensions and is harsh on cable/hose. It should be avoided if at all possible. However, if no other solution is available please consult our sales office.

  6. Vertical Pull

    The reel is mounted on a fixed structure and must overcome the weight of the subtended cable/hose. The length of travel is equivalent to the capacity of the reel.

    If it is necessary to have a length of cable/hose permanently paid out or some equipment (e.g pendant control station) is to be attached to the free end of the cable, a guide to the correct reel selection can be obtained as follows: Add the extra length of cable to that which is to be recovered on the reel and select from the tables a reel corresponding to the total length of cable calculated.

  7. Pendant Reel

    Although the same basic application as (6) Vertical Pull, the additional weight of the pendant control unit itself must be considered when calculating spring tensions. There are many slipring combinations available to suit each pendant application and for this reason it is not possible to show them all in detail in this catalog. Pendant reel will usually be supplied with mounting bracket, ratchet and stopcatch to hold the pendant control at any position and a roller guide. If the reel is to be suspended from a single joist trolley or C-rail track, it should be arranged so that the centre line of the reel is in the same plane as the track.

    A rubber bump stop should be fitted in position as shown to prevent possible damage to cable and pendant station in case of rapid retraction to the uppermost position.

  8. D.C. Magnet Reel

    For Lifting Magnet applications, DC and Early Supply to Crane L, Magnets feature heavy duty 3 way slipring assemblies each fitted with double brush gear insulated for 600V max. working voltage.

INSTALLATION

Direction of Rotation

Standard reels are supplied for the cable/hose fed off in a clockwise direction when viewed from the front of the reel (slipring side) as shown:
If non-standard rotation (i.e. anti-clockwise) is required then this must be stated at the time of placing an order.

REEL MOUNTING

The basic reel is supplied complete with a mounting flange which can be attached to the supporting structure allowing a central clearance hole for connection to the reel shaft.

If there is no suitable structure available to directly attach the flange, a bracket is available which bolts to the flange and allows the reel to be fixed on to a floor or tray etc.

SPECIFICATION

General Construction

By using one piece drum halves made from heavy gauge steel, ELEKTROMAG-METOOL has waterproof whilst employing the minimum of components. The drum revolves on a pair of "sealed for life" ball races resulting in the complete reel being maintenance free.

SPRINGS

ELEKTROMAG-METOOL springs have been proved in service for many years and are manufactured from the highest quality materials. They are of the "Clock spring" or spiral would type and by using the springs singly or assembled in series or in parallel, a wide range of performance characteristics is obtained from the standard range.

The slipring compartments and enclosures of reels shown here are generally designed and built to IP65 protection.
Sliprings/Brushgear

All power sliprings are designed for 600V AC operating voltage stated otherwise and comply with the relevant B.S., V. D.E., C.S.A ., N.E.M.A.etc specifications regarding minimum air gaps and creep distances.

SELECTION

Decide the cable or hose size and the total length to be recovered on the reel.

All the reels should be installed with at least one safety turn left on the drum when the required length of the cable/hose is paid out. This is to reduce damage to the flexible at the point of clamping or termination by spreading the load over one complete turn. When calculating the length of cable or hose to be ordered, allowance should be made for the safety turn, tails needed for terminations at each end if the application calls for a length of cable/hose to be permanently paid out, this must also be included.

The following allowances for safety turn and tails are recommended for each reel which will give a minimum of 500 mm each end for terminations.
S18 series 2m.
S30 series 2m.
S40 series 3m.
S75 series 4m.

CAPACITY TABLES

The capacity tables have been based upon the following parameters:

  1. Horizontal Recovery - Mounting Height 1m to centre line of reel.
  2. Max. acceleration 0.2 m/s2.
  3. Max. velocity 60m/min.
  4. Max. dynamic cable tension 2.5 kg/mm2.
  5. Minimum bend radius of 8 x o/d for cables and manufacturer's recommendation for hoses.
  6. Ambient temperature 45 deg. C.
  7. Catenary capacities are based on a maximum sag of 10% of the paid out length.
