Torque Regulator Powered Cable Reels

THE TORQUE REGULATOR REEL

The Biggest Advance in Motor Driven Cable and Hose Reeling for many years

ELEKTROMAG-METOOL have available a complete range of motor driven torque regulator reels. The reels shown in this catalogue are direct reeling units where the cable compartment is mounted directly on the torque regulator.

For those applications where the length and weight of the cable is in excess of the design capability of the direct reeling units, we have the indirectly driven torque regulator reels. With these reels the torque regulator unit powers the reel compartment through a suitably selected transmission.

ELEKTROMAG-METOOL have produced in the TR range a reliable low cost solution to be the problems of reeling long lengths of cable at the high duty cycle rates demanded by today's heavy industry.

ELEKTROMAG-METOOL range is now available for the complete range of cables for lengths from 30 to 1000 meters, for voltages upto 11000 volts.

Having decided to use a TR motor driven reel to power your particular moving machine, you will have selected a system that is easily installed, has an absolute minimum maintenance requirement and is virtually unaffected by extremes of temperature and environment.

TR reels in their hundreds are now operating in steelworks, ship and ore stockyards, mines, factories etc, in most countries in the world.

The system is patented worldwide and is the winner of the British Design Council Award for highly inventive design

SPECIFICATION

ELEKTROMAG-Metool torque regulator reels may be driven by any substantially constant speed motive power unit. In their standard form the units are designed to accept D90, D100, D112 and D132 metric motors with motor selection depending upon application requirements such as speed, energy requirements etc. The most popular choice is for motors working from a 3 phase supply but single phase or DC motors may also be freely used provided they have performance characteristics in accordance with that required.

The power unit drives the reel through an irreversible worm and wheel transmission which is totally enclosed and lubricated for life. The reduction ratio of the gearbox is fixed and rotational speed of the output spindle is selected by fitting the appropriate speed motor unit. Since the motor mounts are designed to accept universally available stock motors, variations in reeling speeds are easily obtained. In all cases, rotational speed of output spindle is arranged to be in excess of that required for cable reeling which ensures correct cable retrieval under all operating conditions. The energy dissipating capability of the torque regulator unit is greater than the energy permissible through the gearbox thus ensuring adequate safety margins are applied to torque regulator unit.

The torque regulator employs an advanced design friction principle and the unit incorporates a unique arrangement to give stable performance during all operating conditions. A very large area of friction lining in relation to the energy dissipated ensures an extremely long period between lining replacement. Special consideration has been given to lining renewal, if, due to a particularly high duty cycle, this ultimately becomes necessary and the complete replacement of the linings can be accomplished by an unskilled person in less than 30 minutes. The heat dissipating arrangements employ a thermo syphon principle when the reel is in its stalled condition and self-induced air flow when the reel is revolving.
The cable compartment is directly mounted on the torque regulator unit which is easily adjustable in output to suit the various combinations of cable size and length to be reeled. The speed differentials encountered during reeling in and out are accommodated by the torque regulator using the friction drive as a slipping interface.

When engineering torque motor or fluid coupling reels it is very easily established that the inertia of the torque motor rotor or fluid coupling casings coupled with the effects of back driving relatively high reduction ratios produce massive increases in cable tensions.

For this reason the slipping interface of the torque regulator has been positioned on the outboard shaft of the transmission thus isolating the reel from referred inertia effects.

The irreversibility of the worm and wheel transmission and the stable torque characteristics of the torque regulator permit successful cable reeling on the basis of energising the motor for recovery only. The benefits of energising the reel motor for cable recovery solely are not only increased friction lining life and greatly extended intervals between torque correction but of course massive savings in energy consumption.

N.B. For the fixed torque reels, owing to the relatively low torque output of these units, these can be energised continuously without any adverse effect on the friction lining life, thus eliminating the need for any control system.

DRIVE UNITS

There are three basic forms of torque regulator units single face, double face and fixed torque all of which mount on a common gearbox. The gearbox is capable of accepting motors of D90 to D132 frame size. Twenty torque regulator models are manufactured which cover in full the reels required by clients.

TR PAYOUT SENSOR OPERATION

The basic function of the payout sensor is to detect the rotation of the reel ensuring that the reel motor is energised during cable recovery and de-energised during cable payout. A limit switch is operated by a swivelling arm which is rotated by means of a cam fitted to the reel spindle. When the reel revolves in a payout condition the arm is moved until it opens the contacts in the limit switch so de-energising the reel motor. In the reel-in condition the arm is rotated away from the limit switch making the contacts and so energising the reel motor.

Since the payout sensor cannot anticipate the direction of rotation of the reel under start conditions, the reel motor is always energised for 30 seconds by the incorporation of a timer in the control circuit which by-passes the payout sensor to detect whether the machine is moving towards the cable anchor position or away from it, so ensuring that the reel motor is either energised or de-energised.

REEL SELECTION PROCEDURE

In most cases three types of reel are available for use depending upon the application; R: random, M:monospiral and S: standard.

RANDOM

Multiple turns and layers. Mostly used for vertical applications and also where space restrictions do not allow use of monospiral or standard lay reels.

MONOSPIRAL

This type of reel offers controlled reeling of cable and is recommended for high speed reeling applications where cable must be laid within defined limits.

STANDARD

Standard lay reels are a compromise between monospiral reels and random lay reels and offer relatively controlled reeling within smaller dimensions than with monsospiral reels.

HORIZONTAL RECOVERY REELS

The ELEKTROMAG-Metool TR reel capacities are based upon the reel being mounted no more than 4 meters from surface where cable is laid, to the centre line of the reel and that the acceleration of the machine to be fed does not exceed 0.25m/sec . For application requiring higher values please contact ELEKTROMAG.

L = Length of cable to be reeled (note if machine is fed from centre of track this distance will be half total travel).
V = Speed.
S = Sliprings, Type and No. With most ELEKTROMAG-Metool TR Reels it is not necessary to energise the reel during payout and to achieve this a very simple method of control has been designed.

For centre feed applications a payout sensor switch is fitted inside the slipring housing along with a contractor and timer. Protection for the motor is provided by an MCB.

All electrical components are mounted within the standard slipring housing.
